Storage Limits and Quotas

The physics faculty-staff home fileserver is intended for user home directories and small-scale storage only. It is not intended for large-scale bulk data storage.

As an initial rule-of-thumb, anything less than 20GB should be no problem. We do not plan on implementing disk quotas, but will be introducing disk-usage monitoring, so that large scale users can be readily identified when problems ocurr.

Mounting the Faculty-Staff Home Fileserver under Windows

In order to access your Linux home directory you will need to mount it as a lettered drive in Windows. This is a very straightforward procedure. Begin by clicking the Start Menu, and selecting My Computer.

Next, Select the Tools Menu, and then Map Network Drive..., as shown below.

In the next Window, select a drive letter and folder, as shown below. For the folder you will enter the following:

\\groundhog.phys.washington.edu\users\PhysID

Where PhysID is your physics username. You can use any drive letter you wish as long as the letter isn't already in use (generally, anything after G should be fine). Check the Reconnect at logon box unless you want to do this every time you log in. Be sure to click on connect using a different username!!! You'll get a popup window where you should type in the following:

 Username: UWNETID@netid.washington.edu
 Password: your uwnetid password

Now your Unix home directory is mounted on your Windows desktop or laptop as drive letter Z: (if you've used the same instructions as above.)
